Family diversity exhibit featured at Tremont art walk
by Jeff Woodard and Carla Monzo
Cleveland-Celebrating 21st-century life in America, "In Our Family: Portraits of All Kinds of Families" will be displayed June 13 at Pilgrim Congregational United Church of Christ as part of the popular Tremont Art Walk.
"In Our Family" is a touring photo-text display created by the award-winning Family Diversity Projects of Amherst, Mass.
Subjects include single-parent families, families with physical or mental challenges, immigrant families, adoptive families, foster families, divorced families, and gay and lesbian-parented families. Stepfamilies and families comprising multi-racial and multigenerational elements are also included.
"In Our Family" travels to schools, colleges, public libraries, workplaces, places of worship, conferences, museums and communities nationwide. The exhibit is championed by diversity professionals, families, educators and parents.
The display teaches communities that every family configuration should be appreciated and celebrated, a wide variety of people can comprise a happy, flourishing family, children and adults can be hurt by stereotyping, prejudice and teasing, and that it is important to actively challenge prejudice.
A portion of the exhibit is currently.on view. Call the church at 216-861 7388 for current viewing hours. The full exhibit will be presented June 13, when Oikos Jazz Ensemble will interact with the exhibit. Pilgrim Congregational UCC is located at 2592 West 14th St., at the corner of Starkweather Ave. in Cleveland's Tremont neighborhood.
Film celebrates universal bond of love
Local filmgoers are in for a special treat June 19 when the highly acclaimed Inlaws & Outlaws will be shown in the church's theater. Honesty, humor and heart-along with some great music-are key elements of the film that help weave together true stories of couples and singles, gay and straight, to
celebrate the universal bond of love.
Gene Robinson, the first and only openly gay bishop of the Episcopal church, has seen Inlaws several times.
"Every time I see it, I see new meaning and hope and inspiration," Robinson said. He views the film's portrayals of gay and lesbian relationships in the context of all relationships as an important step in creating a new community. "This is a film that will change people's minds by changing their hearts."
The film will begin at 6 p.m. on June 19 in the theater of Pilgrim UCC, 2592 W. 14th St., Cleveland, Ohio 44113. For more information, call the church at 216-861-7388, or log on to the church web site at www.pilgrimalive.org.
Pride service on Sunday before festival
Pride Day falls on June 21, but don't wait until then to kick off Pride Week. The pastoral staff of Pilgrim invites you to join its Open and Affirming congregation for its colorful, spirit-filled Pride church service at 10:30 a.m. on Sunday, June 15.
The Pilgrim congregation draws from every hue of the rainbow-across all lines of age, gender, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation and professional background.
Attorney to speak on couples' issues
As part of this year's Pride Week celebration, Pilgrim has arranged for attorney Donna Powers to present a class on living wills and durable power of attorney for health care. In addition, Powers will speak about unique issues that LGBT individuals and couples should consider.
Powers' class will be offered on back-toback Wednesdays; at 7 p.m. June 18 and 7 p.m. June 25 in the Pilgrim parlor.
If you have any questions, contact Pastor Tricia at triciag@pilgrimalive.org or 216861-7388.
Jeff Woodard is a member of the Pilgrim congregation. Carla Monzo is the church's pastoral assistant.
Log Cabin: Basic Republican values include LGBT people
by Dale Giesige
Log Cabin Republicans started in the late 1970s when a California assemblyman, John Briggs, put an initiative on the ballot to ban gays and lesbians from

Log Cabin members have done it all, from running for public office to being active in their local Republican Party.
The Briggs initiative was heading to victory until a group of gay Republicans convinced former Gov. Ronald Reagan to publicly oppose the measure. The initiative eventually was defeated by one million votes. From this victory, the seed of the Log Cabin Republicans organization was born.
Log Cabin Republicans believe in the basic principles of Ronald Reagan and
the Republican Party and believe these principles reflect our LGBT community: Limited government involvement on our lives, free market solutions to social concerns, lower taxes to promote economic growth, strong national defense to protect our country's freedom, and individual liberty tempered with personal responsibility.
Because Log Cabin Republicans believes in individual liberty, they work hard to include gays and lesbians in the military, and to oppose legislation and ballot initiatives harmful to LGBT employment and relationships.
Log Cabin Republicans have over 50 chapters across the country including Cleveland, Cincinnati, Columbus, and Toledo. Log Cabin members have done it all, from running for public office to being active in their local Republican Party central committees.
